Kopernikus is a European programme, formerly known as Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security (GMES). The programme’s system is designed to observe the Earth so that it can monitor nature and keep an eye on the security of citizens. Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish astronomer who discovered that the sun occupies a central place in the universe. This scientific discovery was a revolution in its time. In recognition of this, the European programme now bears his name. A parallel has thus been drawn between the programme’s name and its activities.
