A European Council regulation, dating from 1988, put EU funds into the context of “economic and social cohesion”. Since then, Cohesion Policy has become one of the most important EU policies. Its main objective is the sustainable development of European regions. Cohesion Policy, which has evolved over time, can be divided into four main historical periods:

  • 1989-1993 – From projects to programmes
  • 1994-1999 - Consolidation and doubling the effort
  • 2000-2006 – Making enlargement a success
  • 2007-2006 – Focus on growth and jobs (Lisbon Strategy)
