Navigation solutions powered by Europe

Europe’s own global navigation satellite system is launched: EGNOS & GALILEO

GALILEO, an independent global navigation satellite system for Europe, will improve the quality of our lives, increase security and be a driving force behind a wide range of economic sectors. From agriculture to the control of power supplies, the essential services provided by satellite navigation systems extend far beyond our cars.

The last quarter of 2011 will see the launch of the first two satellites that make up the system; a further 28 will follow, guaranteeing the provision of services that are central to our economy. In 2009, 6-7% of EU GDP, around €800 billion, was generated through activities that depended on satellite navigation.

"Galileo is of strategic importance for the independence of the European Union,” explained Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the EU’s Enterprise & Industry Directorate General, who added that the system will significantly contribute to the economic recovery of Europe and address such major challenges as sustainable transport.

Other political powers are also putting in place their own global satellite navigation systems: the Russians are revamping their Glonass system, China is developing its Compass system while India and Japan are also coming on board with regional systems. The EU’s system will ensure that Europe remains a global player in a domain which will continue to grow in importance.

A press kit and video will let you explore the EU’s system, whether you are a journalist in search of a good story or passionate about space and technology.
